Once diseases are reported to Marion Public Health, our Epidemiologist (a specially trained disease investigator and analyst) will call the patient to investigate further with the diagnosed individual. This is to gather further information such as onset date, symptoms, treatment, and any other information that is pertinent to the investigation. This is also a great time for you, the patient, to ask any questions you may have!
Public Health Investigations are done for several reasons;
- To attempt to find the cause/source of the exposure where the individual may have contracted the reportable disease
- To identify contacts that may be at risk of contracting the disease depending on how the disease is transmitted
- To assure the individual who are sick are treated appropriately and to recommend treatment for contacts is necessary
- To provide recommendations and guidance on disease transmission to prevent the disease from spreading further to contacts or within the community
